Commando role: SitaWare supports Royal Marines challenge

A SitaWare-based solution is providing the Norway 75 Challenge with force tracking and situational awareness.

A UK Royal Marines team undertaking a gruelling 2,000-mile trek across Norway is benefitting from the tracking and situational awareness capabilities of SitaWare.

The Norway 75 ‘Commando Spirit’ Challenge is commemorating some of the most audacious missions conducted during the Second World War, including ‘Operation Gunnerside’ – made famous by the 1965 film The Heroes of Telemark – and ‘Operation Source’, a raid by mini submarines on the German Navy warships Tirpitz, Lützow and Scharnhorst.

The team set off on June 5th on their way to the most north-eastern point in Norway – well inside the Arctic Circle – from where they are walking, cycling and sea kayaking along a route that visits six sites in total, concluding on July 13th. Along the way they will meet with the Norwegian Home Guard, local historians, and families with connections to the operations.

A SitaWare-based solution is enabling two support vehicles and a UK-based element to track the 8-person team as they cross some of the most challenging terrain that the country has to offer.

The chat function inherent in the solution will also provide real-time communications.

“We are proud to be supporting the Norway 75 Challenge,” said Andrew Graham, Group Senior Vice President, “As well as improving safety through the enhanced situational awareness brought by SitaWare, Systematic is powering a web-based solution that will enable the public to follow the team’s progress.” (http://www.norway75.com/Apps/N75KML.html)

Team members will cycle for up to 150 miles per day and undertake overnight sea kayak stages as they retrace some of the routes followed by UK Commandos, members of the Special Operations Executive, and the Norwegian military and resistance fighters.

Norway 75 aims to help raise awareness for the Royal Marines Charity and its efforts to support good mental health. Support to the charity can be made via the Just Giving page: www.justgiving.com/fundraising/norway75.
